Flock is a brand of surveillance camera that police say is an important tool,
but now those camera systems are facing a new controversy here in Washington.
More than 30 Washington police agencies use the automated license
plate readers to track stolen cars and find criminals.
Police say Flock is a vital tool for crime fighting,
but today there are new questions about the images and data that Flock collects.
Is this material a public record that is accessible by anyone?
That's the question.
Two police agencies have sued a Walla Walla man to
block the release of their flock images and data.
Other police agencies handed over these images and
thousands of others in response to his request.
The man says he's trying to show that this sensitive
information is not as private as people think it is.
All of this follows a University of Washington study
that showed federal immigration agents were accessing local FL systems,
possibly in violation of state law.
