Switchgrass

Switchgrass is a perennial grass native to North America, characterized by its tall, upright growth and feathery flower heads. It can reach heights of 3 to 6 feet and has narrow, flat leaves that can be green to blue-green in color. The flowers are arranged in a panicle and can have a purplish hue, especially when in bloom. It is often used for erosion control, as a biofuel source, and in ornamental landscaping.

Planting

Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in well-drained soil. Space plants 18-24 inches apart. Best planted in spring after the last frost. Soil should be prepared by tilling and removing weeds.

Care

Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer. Switchgrass is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal maintenance. Monitor for pests like aphids and treat as necessary.
