Cuphea ignea is a small, bushy evergreen perennial that produces abundant, slender, tubular, bright red flowers that resemble tiny cigars. The flowers have no fragrance. The leaves are opposite, ovate to lance-shaped, and dark green. It's a popular choice for borders, containers, and as a ground cover, especially for its long blooming season and ability to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. It can be grown as an annual in cooler climates.

Planting

Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or sow directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. Seeds can be surface sown or lightly covered. For best results, maintain a temperature of 70-75°F (21-24°C). Space plants 10-12 inches apart. Prefers well-drained soil.

Care

Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Cuphea ignea is not a heavy feeder, but a light feeding with a balanced fertilizer in spring can promote vigorous growth. Pinch back young plants to encourage bushiness. Deadheading is not necessary as the flowers are sterile and do not produce seeds. It is generally pest and disease resistant.
